Fun With Spam, Part 1. [Nummy @ 10:58 PM]
Apparently there's an invention that is becoming more and more popular by the second. That invention? The internet. In a vast spectrum ranging from video games, to instant messaging, to e-mailing, the internet is becoming a fad that looks as if it has little chance of dying out any time soon, unlike Viggo Mortensen. In the wake of it's popularity, my friends, it has given birth to other creative techniques. The one we delve into tonight? Spam. The other day I recieved an e-mail informing me of an opportunity like none other. But lets stop wasting time describing it, let me just show you the e-mail itself.

" Mark,

I am looking for a pioneer to lead up an expansion project with my company. I will train them and work with them and if they hit certain sales goals I will come and work with them personally. I work directly with the founder and president of our company. They have always supplied me with all the support that I need that is why I have done business in 4 countries and was the 13th top money earner in a multi million-dollar company at 23 years old. Our company is leading the way in technology advances in America and has expanded down to Latin America. The Midwest is just beginning and moving towards the south. So there are many opportunities opening up. I am looking for some top people so let me know a little about yourself when you reply.

Daniel"

Wow, I'm simply shocked, but more so than shocked..I'm uninterested. I was hoping that if I reply in an absolute informal manner that he would lose interest in me and cease his pursuit of my natural leadership qualities.

" umm..sorry to break the usual "formalities" of emails between two people that have no idea who the other is..but that whole thing was a little damn random. I'm kind of amused, though. And sure, I'm going to sound like a skeptic, but bear with me. Say, hypothetically, this whole random thing was legit: why the hell would you pick a teenager fresh out of his first semester in college that you've never spoken to before nor have any idea what the kid is capable of? You have no idea about any forms of experience he may or may not have..and you're offering an "opportunity" to dive into this "multi-million dollar company." Not to mention you saw the kid on the internet. Yeah, sounds like a critical business move to me. Who knows, though, I could be wrong. Hell, Christ was the first one to come up with supply-side economics and look what that turned into...Christianity."

Oh boy, I hope he gets the point. Mommy told me real friends never lie to you. This man, however, seemed full of bullshit.

I failed in my attempt to rely strictly on my luck. He replied to me the next day with another attempt to become my best friend and business partner.

" Mark,

I will be hosting a few conference calls to inform potential candidates more about project they would be working on. On each call we will go over the industry the company history and our state of the art product. In brief our company is IXP we have been around for 2 years and expanded to 15 countries and working on opening up new places in the United States and Europe. The product we are dealing with is VOIP which is the hottest thing in communications. And I am looking for the person or people to invest my time in to train on how to build lead and maintain a successful sales organization. I have a few times available Tuesday 11 am 3pm, or 7pm or wed 11 am or 1pm. New York time. Let me know which time works for you. If there are complications with your current work schedule let me know and we can work something out. After I know which time you will be on I will give you directions for getting on each conference.

Daniel
And yes christianity has grown big!!!"

With this man's relentless pursuit of the incredible person that is me, I also noticed he had a keen sense of missing all sarcasm. So I take a somewhat different, more business-like approach.

" Dear Daniel,

I appreciate the interest you've taken with me a tremendous amount; however, I must regretfully decline that opportunity you have extended to me. Although I am ridiculously perplexed with the decision I have had to make, I believe that this is in my best interests. This farcical dreamscape of multi-million dollar investments and the vagueness of all details about your product lack any sort of valid structure.

All though I'm sure you have the verybest of intentions, the integrity of a business that recruits its newset and youngest investors off of an internet community, such as myspace, is simply something to be skeptical about. The internet is many things. It is also the information superhighway. It is not, however, the Freedom Veteran’s I-70-I-75 interchange. This, apparently, is a common misconception and I would like to thank a good friend of mine for setting me straight on that issue. Thanks Anthony.

When it all reduces down to the vinegar in the kettle that you cook the carrots and peas with, I think your alltogether abruptness and random approach has left me a little bit dazed, and somewhat confused. Those are two states, my friend, which make me feel quite awkward. The fact that your first resort of recruitment is sending out e-mails to teenagers that are easily susceptible to false promises and sabotage makes your offer to spearhead this incredible endeavor seem, all-in-all, a bit risky. Not so much risque, though, because we're all still wearing pants. Well, you are, atleast.

In summation, you're generous offer seems more like a clever scheme to trick my generation into, probably, giving you our social security and credit card numbers. You're a doll, though, and you seem like quite a sweetheart. So I've decided to give you the benefit of the doubt and simply decline your heartfelt befalling.

May the sly fox forever lead your begotten path,

Mark"

Boy I sure do hope this one stops him dead in his tracks. I have an awful sense of deja vu, though.
